Competitions
The motto of this year’s fifth edition of the Competition is “FUGAS CHRUSTAS” (a quote from the classical Polish playwright Aleksander Fredro). Loosely translated, this humorous Latin-Polish hybrid means “escaping into bushes”, while in the context of Fredro’s play, it was expertly translated by Noel Clark as ‘giving us the slip’. On the one hand, it is a metaphor for the apparent protection that nature offers against the dangers of civilisation; on the other, it references to nature as one of the great themes in art. In the context of today’s struggle against the pandemic, retreating from human clusters remains a tried and proven way to avoid illness and death. Seclusion also fosters the creative spirit. When, in 1348, a green nook in Tuscany provided Boccaccio and his friends with refuge from the plague in a green corner of Tuscany – the fruit of this unusual situation came as the stories of the Decameron told and recorded at that time. Retreating into the landscape is also a reflection of inner soulscapes created by the artist’s psyche and imagination. It also means recording the codes and mysteries that connect us to nature and others that remain unread. In difficult situations, a notebook provides the simplest and most direct method of recording images and words, a hand lightly touching upon the essence of things, leaving an intimate trace
